John Burgess
John Burgess is an instrumentalist and composer focusing on innovative ways to utilise the electric double bass and electronic technology as tools for creating solo improvised music. He is influenced not only by contemporary styles in the electronic age, but also jazz, European and Asian sounds. These stylistic influences are augmented by a range of extended techniques on the electric double bass, including percussive, pizzicato and arco sounds, which produce a unique effect on the electric instrument. John has collaborated in a range of musical situations, ranging from jazz ensembles, traditional classical duets, classical and contemporary fusions of bass and harp, soloing with symphony orchestras (International Youtube symphony 2011, International Spacetime Concerto Competition 2012), to performing his own solo concerts showcasing his bass and electronic compositions. John performed one of these concerts as the Artist In Residence at the Newcastle Conservatory of Music in 2013.
